Android OS is a Linux-based platform for mobile phones such as smartphones and tablet computers Android was released under theApache v2 open source license.
Android was developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) Google financially backed the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., and later purchased it in 2005.Google defines Android as a "software stack" for mobile phones. a coalition of hardware, software and telecommunications companies. More than 30 companies were involved in the OHA, including Qualcomm, Broadcom, HTC, Intel, Samsung, Motorola, Sprint, Texas Instruments and Japanese wireless carriers KDDI and NTT DoCoMo.
Android powers hundreds of millions of mobile devices in more than 190 countries around the world. Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices . It's the largest installed operating system for mobile devices and growing fast—every day another million users power up their Android devices for the first time and start looking for apps, games, and other digital content.

This operating system  runs on both of the most widely deployed cellular standards, GSM/HSDPA andCDMA/EV-DO. Android will also support:
